How to Train a Yorkshire Terrier
Do you have a Yorkshire terrier that you are trying to train and you feel like you are losing the battle? Yorkshire Terriers are stubborn dogs. If you are really set on training them you have to commit to doing it wholly and not just half time. Learning how to train a yorkshire terrier means setting up a schedule and sticking to it so that your dog gets plenty of training time and learns as quickly as possible.
You should know a little bit about your dog breed before you start training them. Yorkshire terriers are very stubborn dogs and they do not have a great memory or attention span. So, when you begin to train them, you have to do it every day. If you miss a day, they will forget what you have taught them and they will go right back to where they started from. This will put you back in your training schedule since you will have to repeat the previous day’s lesson so it is adviseable to stay on track and not miss any traning sessions.
It is always good to use treats when you are training a dog, especially a Yorkie. Give her a treat each time she does what you want her to do. This way she will know what you expect of her and will be more likely to respond to commands the way you would like. Positive reinforcement is the way to go. You should always speak in a nice firm voice when you are training a dog. This will let the dog know that you mean business and that you are the boss.
Everyone needs a break once in a while and dogs are no different. Make sure you allow for some time to run around and play in between training sessions. Once the dog has had some time to play you can get back down to business. When you are training your Yorkie, you should make sure it is just the two of you. As was mentioned previously, they really do not have a great attention span. If there are other people around they are very likely to be distracted and not really remember what you are teaching them.
When you are teaching commands, make sure you use the same wording and the same terminology all of the time. You do not want to confuse your dog by switching up the language. Consistency is therefore crucial to success. You want to make sure that you are consistent and repetitious in your training efforts.
Lastly, do not overwhelm your dog. You do not want to teach more than one thing at a time. They are more likely to be trained well if you wait until they have mastered one command before going on to learning something new. Just like when you teach something to a child. They are more likely to retain one thing at a time. The more you teach at once, the less likely they are to remember the details of the training.
